The Garage Door Guy

Have a garage door-related question? We have the answer! Check out our FAQs below to learn more about our company and services.

  • Do you work on non-garage doors?

No. Unfortunately, as a garage door company, The Garage Door Guy does not.

  • How much room do you need in the garage?

As a garage door company, we recommend around 10 feet back from the front of the garage.

  • How often does my garage door need service?

We recommend garage door services at least once a year, twice if possible.

  • How long do garage door springs last?

That depends on how often you use the door after the initial garage door installation. If you use your door twice per day, according to This Old House, you should get 10-12 years out of your springs.

  • How do I tell if the garage door spring is balanced properly?

To decide if you need any garage door services, we have a trick. Open your door halfway. If it stays there, it's good. If it falls, it needs more tension.

  • Why is the opener running but the door isn't moving?

The opener could be disconnected from the door. Check the disengage pull string and make sure it's engaged. Pull back on the string toward the opener and it should re-engage the opener. The gear could also be stripped if that happens. If you're noticing any other issues, call us for garage door services.

  • What does rolling code technology mean and what does it do?

The code switches inside the unit itself every time you use it so nobody can copy it. For any other questions regarding the technology, just give our garage door company a call.

  • Can my garage door be painted?

Yes, it can be painted. After your garage door installation, just rough up the surface with steel wool and cleaner, let it dry, and it can be painted.

  • When should I replace my garage door?

You should invest in a new garage door installation when your current door is too damaged to be safe. You should also replace a door if it becomes too difficult to close or malfunctions. According to Consumer Affairs, the typical garage door has a lifespan of 15 to 30 years with proper maintenance.

  • What are the quietest garage doors?

The quietest doors are the three-layered doors that have steel front and back and insulation in between. You also want nylon rollers to limit noise. If you're considering a new garage door installation, consider these types of doors if you want to prioritize noise reduction.
